Food and Thanksgiving

Happy Holidays!

Two months have passed and while there have been a lot of events, this years holidays have been fantastic.

Japan isn't our home away from home yet, and we miss our family, but it has been a lot of fun to spend time with friends who live here but also aren't from here.

Liiiike, over eating. For example, we have had two turkey dinners here. That's right two! And while you are thinking, "We're gonna eat turkey for a week.", remember that no one in Japan really raises or farms turkey's. I have heard in a few instances that a whole turkey can cost up to 1000 yen a pound (about $12.50).

This turkey sprinkled with gold is laying on top of delicious stuffing. And the gold isn't gold, it's delicious fat.

Which reminds me of a funny story we heard. Some members in our branch, the Stokers, had gone to CostCo to buy food for dinner for their family. They have three kids and so buy a lot of food. When Brother Stoker picked up the largest piece of beef for roasting, the young japanese kids started saying to their mom, "That man just bought the big meat!" to which we were told the mom was heard saying "How are they going to cook that??"

That story is just inspiring us to buy an oven or a crock pot or something so that we can avoid eating the following things, not to say that all things are like this, we find good food all the time.

Tacoyaki - fried balls filled with octopus. At the beginning it tastes like chicken  pot pie, and then it turns worse. We didn't finish, maybe we can trick ourselves into trying it again in the future.

Yes, you are seeing this correctly, they leave the heads on the shrimp.
